The Los Angeles Dodgers have been hot and cold all season, and that has especially been the case over the last couple of weeks as they followed up a four-game losing streak with a nine-game winning streak and then lost the first two of their four-game series against the Miami Marlins.
The losing streak was extended to three games on Wednesday night as the Dodgers couldn’t hold a 5-2 lead and wound up losing to the Marlins, 9-6 on a walk-off home run by Jesus Aguilar.
It was Miami that got on the board first as Garrett Cooper hit a first-inning home run off Jake Reed to give them an early 1-0 lead. Reed went just one inning in what was a bullpen game for the Dodgers.
Mitch White, just recalled before the game, then came in to pitch the second and didn’t fair much better, allowing a homer to Jesus Sanchez to double Miami’s lead to 2-0.
The Dodgers’ offense finally came alive in the third inning, however, with AJ Pollock and Mookie Betts each hitting solo shots to tie the game. After Albert Pujols single and Max Muncy walked, Justin Turner then launched a three-run home run to left to give L.A. its first lead at 5-2.
White was back out there for the third and again allowed a run on a RBI double by Aguilar. A perfect relay from Pollock to Chris Taylor to Austin Barnes gunned a second runner at the plate to end the inning though, so the Dodgers led 5-3 through an eventful first three innings.
After settling in with a 1-2-3 fourth, White went back out for the fifth and ran into some more trouble thanks to his defense. Jon Berti reached on an error by Gavin Lux to begin the inning and then quickly stole second. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scored on a groundout to cut the Dodgers’ lead to just one at 5-4.
Phil Bickford then came in to pitch the sixth for the Dodgers and took just one pitch to lose the lead as Cooper hit his second home run to tie it at five.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the eighth that the Marlins scored the go-ahead run, and it came on a two-out, opposite-field single by Sanchez off Kenley Jansen.
The Dodgers quickly responded though as Zach McKinstry hit a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth. The Marlins won it in the bottom half though on a walk-off home run by Aguilar.
