Dodgers Injury Updates: David Price, Tony Gonsolin Due To Face Batters

Having been on the 10-day injured list for just over two weeks because of a Grade 2 right hamstring strain, David Price took another step forward in his recovery before Tuesday’s game against the Seattle Mariners.

Price threw off the mound with Justin Turner in the batter’s box but not taking any swings. Turner nodded after multiple pitches, suggesting the left-hander was sharp in the exercise. Price ended the throwing session by sprinting to first base multiple times.

“I’ve seen some videos of his ‘pens, but to see him live, really good. He didn’t seem like he was holding anything back, did some PFPs as far as just running off the mound towards first,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

“Didn’t seem like he was compensating for anything at all in his delivery and the stuff was good.”

Next for Price, assuming he doesn’t experience any setbacks with his hamstring, is to face batters in a live situation later this week. Unlike the expectation with Cody Bellinger, that won’t be in the form of a rehab assignment with a Minor League affiliate.

“It hasn’t been that long, in our opinion,” Roberts said of Price’s absence. “David, being the veteran that he is, we’ll let him make that call. Our hope is to go out and face some hitters — whether it’s once or twice — and then be activated.”

Gonsolin moving along

Like Price, Tony Gonsolin is also due to face batters this week. He has been on the 10-day IL since the first week of the season because of right shoulder inflammation.

“He’s progressing, but understanding or knowing we need to build him up to at least four (innings) and 60 (pitches), or five and 75, he’s going to throw this week,” Roberts said.

“I think it’s going to be two innings against hitters. Assuming that goes well, he’s got to look out at the progression in terms of three and 45, four and 60, and we’ll kind of see where he is at.”

Once activated, Gonsolin is expected to fill the rotation as the fifth starter due to Dustin May undergoing Tommy John surgery.
