Dodgers Injury Update: Blake Treinen Out Until After All-Star Break

Blake Treinen made just three appearances before he became among the pitchers the Los Angeles Dodgers lost to injury.

Treinen began to experience right shoulder discomfort prior to pitching against the Cincinnati Reds on April 14, and the pain intensified the ensuing days. The Dodgers hoped a week of rest would remedy the issue.

However, Treinen was put on the 10-day injured list at the start of a series against the San Diego Padres. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts initially estimated Treinen would have a short stint on the IL, but the calculus changed more recently.

According to Jack Harris of the L.A. Times, the Dodgers now expect Treinen to be out until some time after the All-Star Game:

What started out as a seemingly minor shoulder injury for Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen has turned into a long-term absence, with manager Dave Roberts saying Sunday that the right-hander will be out until at least after the All-Star break.

Like Andrew Heaney, Treinen went for an MRI on his ailing shoulder, which did not reveal any structural damage. He was expected to undergo further examination in L.A. this week, but the course of action is now expected to be a rehab program.

Treinen has not been able to resume throwing since being put on the IL last month.

How will Dodgers replace Treinen?

Brusdar Graterol and Evan Phillips are among those being counted on to help fill the void, and Tommy Kahnle is expected to be part of that equation as well. Though, Roberts said the Dodgers want to ease Kahnle back into his first Major League action since July 2020.

Treinen’s injury was a factor in the Dodgers activating Kahnle off the 10-day IL earlier than first expected. Kahnle did do his part while on rehab assignment, proving his fastball command and health were not question marks.
