DodgerHeads: Dodgers’ Third Starter In Postseason, Potential Wild Card Matchups & More

As the 2020 MLB regular season quickly draws to a close, the Los Angeles Dodgers can begin looking ahead to the postseason as they already have clinched a spot in October for the eighth straight year.

The Dodgers had a day off on Monday before the final week of the regular season, which was the perfect time for a “DodgerHeads” episode to serve as a bit of a postseason preview discussion between DodgerBlue.com’s Jeff Spiegel and Daniel Starkand.

The show started by reviewing recent trends with the Dodgers, whether it be Chris Taylor’s hot bat, Max Muncy’s cold streak and everything in between.

The focus then shifted to the postseason, where Spiegel and Starkand debated on who should be the team’s third starter behind Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler. While Dustin May, Julio Urias and Tony Gonsolin are all having strong seasons and are worthy of receiving consideration, only one would get the ball if the Wild Card Series required all three games.

In addition to the starting rotation, a big focus of the discussion was also on what the Dodgers lineup should look like in October, as well as the pecking order in the bullpen amid Kenley Jansen’s recent struggles.

Regular season awards are also just around the corner, and Mookie Betts is in the National League MVP conversation so his numbers were compared to the other candidates.

Possible Wild Card matchups for Dodgers

Even though there is less than a week remaining in the regular season, the NL postseason picture is still very unclear. The Dodgers will be facing the eighth and final seed in the Wild Card round, although there are still five or six teams that could end up in that spot.

Spiegel and Starkand discussed those potential opponents such as the Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals.

They each named who would be the easiest opponents and which would present the most challenges for the Dodgers in the best-of-three series.
